The United Nations – African Union Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) mandate ended on 31 December 2020 following UN Security Council Resolution 2559, concluding over a decade of peacekeeping efforts to stabilize Darfur and protect civilians.

On 14 April 2016, UNAMID Sector West Office, handed over to local judicial authorities a newly constructed rural court building in Adikong area, about 25 kilometers west of El-Geneina town, West Darfur. The construction project, undertaken under the auspices of UNAMID Rule of Law Section, is part of the Mission’s Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) programme.

Officially inaugurated on 6 April by the Chief of the local Adikong Court, Mujeeb Mohammed, who is also a representative of Chief Judge in the area, the handover ceremony was attended by local officials, community leaders, representatives of the national military and police forces and members of the local community.

Addressing guests at the handover ceremony, Mr. Mujeeb Mohammed commended UNAMID for its efforts in promoting the rule of law through the establishment of such institutions and enhancing the capacity of law personnel in state rural courts. “I wish to emphasize the importance of continued cooperation and coordination between UNAMID and the judiciary system in promoting the rule of law in West Darfur,” he added.

Speaking on behalf of UNAMID Sector West Office, UNAMID Judicial Affairs Officer, Tigani Abbas, highlighted the Mission’s mandate, particularly the role of the Rule of Law Unit, and reiterated UNAMID’s commitment to the promotion of rule of law in Darfur, in collaboration with national partners.

Adikong area, with a population of about 6500 people and considered an administrative unit under the locality of El-Geneina, is located on the border between Chad and the west part of Sudan.
