The United Nations – African Union Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) mandate ended on 31 December 2020 following UN Security Council Resolution 2559, concluding over a decade of peacekeeping efforts to stabilize Darfur and protect civilians.

On 22 September 2014, UNAMID Police organized a one-day workshop on indigenous conflict resolution mechanisms for more than 30 women leaders from Abu Shouk and Al Salam camps for internally displaced persons in El Fasher, North Darfur. The event aimed at contributing to the empowerment of women and enhancing their traditional role in resolving conflicts.Addressing the opening session of the workshop, Ms. Juliana Abahrepresentative of UNAMID Police, highlighted the effective role women can play in peace building and social peace in Darfur.
Meanwhile, Ms. Nafeesa Mohammed, a woman leader at Abu Shouk camp, maintained that women are strong agents of change. “Women are capable of producing change in their communities,” she said, pointing out that such a workshop presents an opportunity for women leaders to acquaint the necessary methods of conflict resolution.
