The United Nations – African Union Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) mandate ended on 31 December 2020 following UN Security Council Resolution 2559, concluding over a decade of peacekeeping efforts to stabilize Darfur and protect civilians.

UN Secretary-General Assistants visit Sudan

UN Assistant Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Bintou Keita; the Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support, Oscar Fernandez-Taranco, and their delegation today started their five- day visit to Sudan. Earlier today, the delegation met the Acting Wali (Governor) of North Darfur State, Mr. Marwan Eltigani Altayib in El Fasher. This trip to Sudan, has as a specific focus, UNAMID’s current drawdown phase from the Darfur region leading to the exit of the Mission by the end of June 2020. The delegation’s visit will cover north and central Darfur and the Sudanese capital, Khartoum. During this trip, the ASGs and their delegation will meet Government of Sudan officials at federal and state levels, civil society groups, internally displaced persons, UN Country Team officials, UNAMID leadership and staff.
