The United Nations – African Union Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) mandate ended on 31 December 2020 following UN Security Council Resolution 2559, concluding over a decade of peacekeeping efforts to stabilize Darfur and protect civilians.

Arab League election observers meet with UNAMID leadership

13 April 2010 - The head of the League of Arab States’ Elections Observation Mission, Ambassador Salah Halima, today paid a visit to UNAMID headquarters in El Fasher, North Darfur, where he met with the Mission’s Joint Special Representative (JSR) Ibrahim Gambari and Deputy JSR Mohamed Yonis.During the meeting with the JSR, Dr. Halima and his colleague, Nabila Goddi Mzali, discussed the ongoing elections and voiced hope that the process would be a success. Dr. Halima also thanked UNAMID for its logistical support to the Arab League’s mission in the region.

The Ambassador later joined a UNAMID patrol to the Abu Shouk and Al Salam Internally Displaced Persons camps.

The Arab League has sent an 8-member observer team to monitor the elections in the three Darfur states.
