On 25 Feb 2016, UNAMID Sector South inaugurated a Community Development Centre for women in Otash camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs), about 15 km, north Nyala Town, South Darfur.
The project was funded by UNAMID Civil Affairs Section through its Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) programme and implemented in collaboration with the Renewed Solar Energy Organization as a local implementing partner. The Centre will be used for various activities by different segments of the community living in the IDP Camp, including women, youth and men.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Sector South Head of Office, Berhanemeskel Nega, outlined the importance of such community centres, especially for women who have a vital peacemaking role in their own communities. He also appealed for the empowerment of women, both socially and economically, to enable them to play their roles effectively.
Sector South Head of Office added that UNAMID and UNCT work with central and state government and the local community to bring about peace in the region. “Peace can only be achieved through an inclusive process and with the support of the people of Sudan in general and the people of Darfur in particular. I urge you to utilize the Development Centre to fulfill that end by supporting efforts exerted by all concerned parties who work for peace and development” he said.
In her keynote address, the representative of the Ministry of Social Affairs in the state, Massara Musa, underscored the commitment from the Government of Sudan to empower women through adoption of policies and legislature that encourage women development. She also commended the Sudanese women and Darfuri women in particular, for their active participation in all forums of peace negotiations or consultations where their views have taken on board at the national and international levels.
