23 Mar 11 - Humanitarian mission to East Jebel Marra

23 March 2011 - Approximately half a tonne of food and medical supplies, including vaccines, has today been delivered by air to Fanga Suk, in East Jebel Marra, from El Fasher, North Darfur. The inter-agency mission was led by UNICEF, OCHA and UNAMID.

The team held talks with local community leaders from Fanga Suk and other nearby Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) hosting communities about their most pressing needs and the provision of basic services. Further, the humanitarian team administered vaccinations to more than 100 children under the age of five.

The mission comes following a visit by Joint Special Representative Ibrahim Gambari last week to East Jebel Marra, the first in months to the region. Gambari has since held talks with Government officials and leaders of armed movements in a bid to help establish a humanitarian security corridor on the ground.
