UNAMID Chief: Paris talks productive, SLA/AW pledges greater cooperation


El Fasher, 21 March 2010 – UNAMID Joint Special Representative (JSR) Professor Ibrahim Gambari concluded yesterday a two-day session of Darfur peace discussions in Paris with high-level French government officials, diplomats and the head of the Sudanese Liberation Army / Abdul Wahid (SLA/AW).

The JSR met with Abdul Wahid Mohammed Al-Nour, leader of the SLA/AW, as well as several high level French officials, notably Jean-David Lavitte, diplomatic advisor to the President of France; Andre Parant, African Affairs Advisor to the President; and, Ambassador Sylvie Bermann, Director of the UN and International Organization, and Ambassador Stephane Gompertz, Director of African Affairs, both with the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs;.

Professor Gambari briefed the French government officials and diplomats on the peace process and the way forward, as well as the primary goals of the Mission. The French officials pledged their support to the JSR’s priorities in implementing the mandate of UNAMID.

In a lengthy meeting with Mr. Al-Nour, Professor Gambari encouraged the SLA/AW leader to join the peace process. He also requested greater cooperation on the ground with UNAMID, to allow humanitarian aid agencies better access to verify and assess the situation in specific areas. Mr. Al-Nour expressed his support in establishing a good working relationship with UNAMID.

“The discussions with the SLA/AW leader were frank and useful and we have agreed to continue regular consultations,” JSR Gambari said.

Professor Gambari is today in Cairo, where he took part in the International Donor Conference for the Development and Reconstruction of Darfur.
