1 June 2010 - UNAMID today convened a preparatory workshop on women’s issues at El Fasher University, North Darfur. The event brought together women from civil society organizations from 16 localities. The forum presented an overview of and discussion on United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325.

UNSCR 1325, adopted on 31 October 2000, requires parties in a conflict to respect women’s rights and to support their participation in peace negotiations and in post-conflict reconstruction.

The participants assessed the impact of the Resolution on women’s daily lives including physical protection, protection and security in non-state controlled areas, access to justice, living conditions, participation in politics and in the peace process, socio-economic empowerment and the promotion of women’s rights.

The messages and proposals taken during the session will be submitted to the UN Security Council when it meets in October of this year to review progress made on the implementation of the Resolution and in subsequent decrees on women, peace and security.

This gender-specific workshop is one of several being carried out in Darfur over the course of the week.
