  • Yala Nebni Darfur, 26 June 2016: Challenges to get married in El Fasher

    Today’s programme features an interview with Omda Mohammed Abbaker, Director of Social Welfare State of North Darfur, about the high cost of dowries in El Fasher that makes a marriage for a girl becomes a challenge, as often men cannot afford to pay the price as well as a feature about the “Daya” tradition midwives who use a rope to help women deliver their babies in remote areas of Darfur when there is no medical assistance available. This practice is the main cause of fistula. Health institutes and health oriented NGOs have been training qualified midwives for the remote villages in Darfur to solve this issue.

    Girls’ education is important as it will help girls in determining their future. In this programme you will listen to a dialogue about the topic and the impact to the development of Darfur. Amongst some Darfuri this concept is still considered as radical, as in parts of the society believe that girls need to work at home than being at school.

    Today’s programme features an interview with Yasser Haroun, Director of El-Amal Cultural Association in El-Fasher, about his organization’s cultural activities to spread a message of peace in North Darfur. The association has worked in partnership with the UN and national Non-Government organizations to spread messages of peace through songs and drama for sustainable peace in North Darfur.

    In this programme you will listen about the importance of having awareness of breast cancer. Having awareness and being vigilance for symptoms of early signs of breast cancer can save your life. When the disease is diagnosed early in its initial stages, the treatments available range wider and more diverse, as the chances of full recovery are large.

    In today’s programme you will learn about Um Hakou, a favorite children’s game in Nyala South Darfur that has been passed on from the previous generations where children play under the moonlight in villages and the importance of children of nomads to attend school.

  • UNAMID TODAY, 23 June 2016: A special story of woman of Darfur (repeat)

    In this programme you will hear how Darfuri women,  due to sheer strength of their characters, they battle against all the odds and succeed in various fields. Often denied a chance to education due to early marriage,  some Darfuri women have striven and ended up with education, nevertheless all  the challenges.  The programme highlights the story of Haram Abdalla. Married off at the age of ten, Haram, however, decided to continue with education even though she had to breastfeed and perform her usual house chores. Finally she graduated with BA honours in English. She is now a teachers of English in one of Darfuri schools.

    Today’s  programme features a well-known custom in Darfur that is part of wedding celebration called  Eljertq, that is when the two families of newlywed decide to organize a night celebration where the families wear special kind of locally produced perfume to welcome the new life for the two.  

  • Yala Nebni Darfur, 22 June 2016: A story of Kalthoum Abaker Yagoub

    In today’s programme, you will hear a story of Kalthoum Abaker Yagoub, a 50 years old mother from Um Dwinh in El Geneina, who has returned to school after successfully bringing up her children. Kalthoum makes Darfuri traditional shoes known as almarkob for living in the last 35 years.

  • Yala Nebni Darfur, 21 June 2016: Gender equality in education and employment

    Today’s programme features gender equality in education and employment in North Darfur and the role of UNAMID in ensuring such equality taken place by helping construct girls’ schools.
