Statement by the Trilateral Mechanism on the Saudi-American initiative

The Trilateral Mechanism (comprised of African Union-Intergovernmental Authority on Development -United Nations) welcomes the Saudi-American initiative and hopes that the technical talks between representatives of the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in Jeddah will result in understandings leading to a comprehensive ceasefire, enabling urgent humanitarian assistance to be provided to the civilians whose protection shall remain paramount.

The Trilateral Mechanism renews its appeal to both sides to immediately cease hostilities, restore calm and to protect Sudan and its people from further violence and bloodshed.

The Trilateral calls on the sides to protect civilians and to refrain from attacks on healthcare facilities and other civilian infrastructure. Any further escalation of violence could be devastating for the country and the region.
