Closure of UNMIL

The United Nations Mission in Liberia was established in October 2003 to support for the implementation of a ceasefire agreement and peace process, and to assist with the maintenance and restoration of law and order throughout Liberia. The mission successfully completed its mandate on 30 March 2018.

UNMIL police officers awarded with United Nations medal

26 January 2018, Monrovia - For their remarkable service to peacekeeping mission in Liberia, nine United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) Police Officers were awarded with United Nations (UN) medals at the ceremony organized in UNMIL HQ.

Speaking at the award ceremony, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNMIL Mr. Farid Zarif, praised the UN Police (UNPOL) for their ongoing support to national counterparts in Liberia building on the efforts of their predecessors over the fourteen years of UNMIL’s presence in Liberia.

“In recognition of your services, I have the honour of giving you the medals that you have deserved in acknowledgment to your valuable contribution to peacekeeping, to the United Nations, to your own nation but first and foremost to the people of Liberia” said SRSG Zarif.

The awarded UNMIL police officers were from Sweden, Nepal, Nigeria, Germany, Bangladesh, South Korea, Zambia, Bhutan, Ukrain and Gambia.

A medal is presented as award to the police officers serving in mission for at least three months. Present at the ceremony were the D/SRSG for Rule of Law Mr. Waldemar Vrey, the UNMIL Police Commissioner Mr. Simon Blatchly and UNPOL Head of Election Support Unit, Ms. Claudia Lupea.
