Closure of UNMIL

The United Nations Mission in Liberia was established in October 2003 to support for the implementation of a ceasefire agreement and peace process, and to assist with the maintenance and restoration of law and order throughout Liberia. The mission successfully completed its mandate on 30 March 2018.

Over the past five months more than 130,000 Ivorian refugees have sought safety in Liberia. Many have found shelter in the homes of host communities and have had to rely on the host communities for basic necessities. Working in a coordinated manner, UN agencies and the international community also continue to provide basic needs assistance to refugees, most of whom are women and children. The following are a series of photographs of refugees taken in Butuuo in Nimba County on March 16 2011 by UNMIL photographer Staton Winter.
