UNAMID Organizes Income Generating Workshop for Women in North Darfur

On 12 May, UNAMID`s Communication and Public Information Section (CPIS) organized a two-day workshop on creation of income generating projects for 50 women in Golo (B) village, approximately twenty kilometers, west of El Fasher, North Darfur. The workshop is part of the “Darfur Women Talk Peace” campaign conducted by CPIS Community Outreach Unit in collaboration with the Mother and Child Directorate in the Darfur Regional Authority (DRA) Ministry of Social Affairs and the Centre for Women Development and Peace Building Network also in North Darfur.

Addressing Workshop participants, the Director of the maternity and Child Directorate in DRA, Ms. Nadra Mustafa, stated that her organization values its partnership with UNAMID in the peace campaign aimed at building and improving the economic situation of women in Darfur. “We believe that the women in this region have a huge role to play in bringing peace and maintaining peaceful co- existence among the different communities in the region, especially in emphasizing the link between peace and development” Ms. Mustafa stated.

Speaking at the same occasion, UNAMID CPIS representative, Ms. Musi Khumalo, noted that the project is aimed at providing training on pasta making and other income generating activities for 50 women from Golo and surrounding villages. The women were also trained on the importance of hygiene in the home. “In Africa we say that when you teach one woman, you have taught the whole village. Therefore, through this income-generating training, UNAMID and its partners in the project, has touched many villages in Golo. We strongly encourage women to use such gatherings and indeed in their homes, to spread the message of peace to their families and communities” noted Ms Khumalo.

The Darfur Women Talk Peace campaign, launched in March 2015, has since been extended to the various localities in North Darfur state and plans to reach at least 2000 women in the state and across Darfur before the end of 2016.
