UNAMID Inaugurates Kindergarten School in West Darfur

On 19 May 2016, UNAMID`s  Gender Advisory Unit,  Sector West, in partnership with the Ministry of Local Governance , inaugurated the El-Humairaa Basic School for girls at Ardamata Administrative Unit in  El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur. The project is part of the Mission’s Quick Impact Project (QIPs) aimed at creating a conducive learning environment and at increasing the school enrolment rate of children in the area. Over 300 people, including UNAMID staff, representatives of the Ministries of Local Governance and Public Service and Education, local community members, teachers and students, attended the inauguration event.

Addressing guests at the inauguration ceremony, UNAMID Sector West Officer-in-Charge, Mr. Oumar Kane, commended people in Ardamata locality for the timely completion of the project which is a joint effort between UNAMID, the local community and Ministries of Education and Local Governance. “Through the approval and consequent implementation of this project, UNAMID fully recognizes the importance of education in the community and how this plays an important role in achieving peace, security and development in the area,” Mr. Kane added.

Speaking on behalf of the State Minister of Education, Mr. Basher noted that “this project is timely and realistic. UNAMID has done its part so it is left with us to maintain the kindergarten school in the best way possible for the benefit of our children.”

The Headmistress of El-Humairaa Basic School for Girls, Ms. Suad Hajjo El-Basher stated that the new kindergarten school will not only create a conducive learning environment for the children in the locality but will also play a significant role in solving the problem of girls dropping out of school at an early age.

The guests at the inauguration event were treated to various cultural performances, songs and dance.
