UNAMID Holds Inter-tribal Culture Festival in Zalingei, Central Darfur

On 20 April 2016, UNAMID Communications and Public Information Section in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Affairs, Culture, Information and Tourism, in Zalingei, Central Darfur, organized a cultural festival with the participation of various tribes in the area. The event, aimed at strengthening the social fabric among local communities, included exhibition of local handmade products, traditional dances and musical concerts. UNAMID Holds Inter-tribal Culture Festival in Zalingei, Central Darfur

On 20 April, UNAMID Sector Central, in partnership with the local state Ministry of Social Affairs, Culture, Information and Tourism, organized an Inter-tribal Culture Festival, Art Exhibition and Musical Concert in Zalingei, Central Darfur. The event, held under the theme “Heritage our Unity”, was attended by the Deputy Wali (Governor) of Central Darfur, the Minister of Social Affairs, Culture, Information and Tourism, local government Officials, UNAMID staff, representatives of local organizations, students and the local community.

 

The Festival, which took place at the Zalingei University Campus, comprised cultural performances from different groups representing the various tribes residing in the state, an art exhibition and music concerts by local musicians.

 

Speaking at the occasion, the representative of UNAMID Head of Office, Sector Central Mr. Omar Gulaid, observed that the culture of the people of central Darfur, is a mixture of all of the customs and traditions of the different tribes of Darfur. “Darfur has a rich culture. This culture and the local norms play a critical role in creating a peaceful environment within the different tribes living in the region. Therefore, let us work together to use this rich and productive culture to create a conductive environment to promote peace and stability in Darfur,” Gulaid said.

 

In his remarks, the Deputy Wali (Governor) of Central Darfur, Mr, Ahmed Eltigani Seka expressed his appreciation to the event organisers for putting together such an important event which reflects the true Darfurian culture. “The situation in Darfur calls for combined efforts between UNAMID and the Government of Sudan to achieve lasting peace not only in Darfur” added Mr. Seka

 

Addressing the same gathering, the Minister of Social Affairs Central Darfur statem Ms.Sadia Adam Ali, said she was gratified by the high participation of the different groups in the cultural festival. The Minister commended the unique composition of the music band, which comprised members from different Darfurian tribes, stating that this is an example of the rich Darfurian culture and its ability to create a peaceful and stable environment in Darfur.
