UNAMID Celebrates the United Nations Day

On 23 October 2015, UNAMID and the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) celebrated the United Nations Day under the theme “No life without peace” in El Fasher, North Darfur. The event, which took place at Al-Zubeir Stadium, included a photo exhibition and local cultural performances. Additionally, some informational materials on UNCT activities and UNAMID’s mandate were distributed among the attendees. 

The local population, including women’s groups and youth representatives from El Fasher town and surrounding camps for the displaced attended the occasion, along with government officials, UNAMID staff and members of the UNCT.

Addressing the event participants, UNAMID’s Joint Special Representative (JSR), Martin Uhomoibhi, read out the UN Secretary General’s message on the Day, where Mr. Ban stated that humanity has entered the era of sustainability with a global commitment to fulfil the great promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. “This year’s observance of United Nations Day occurs at a time of transition for the world and for the United Nations”. The UN Secretary-General also urged all people to Work harder to empower women, engage youth and uphold human rights for all.

In her remarks, Amy Martin, representative of the UNCT highlighted the United Nations sustainable development goals, which call for ending poverty and hunger and protecting the planet from degradation. “There can be no sustainable development without peace and no peace without sustainable development” added Amy.

Fatima Ibrahim Mohammed, Minister of social Affairs and Representative of the Wali (governor) of North Darfur, expressed the government readiness to cooperate with UNAMID and UN agencies to achieve peace, stability and security in Darfur and emphasized on the importance of the role played by women to maintain peace in their communities. She requested UNAMID and its partners to continue their support to the Government of Sudan to achieve peace, stability and development in Darfur.

Similar activities are being held in other states in Darfur to mark the United Nations Day.
