Tawilla Commissioner appreciates UNAMID support to youth projects in locality

On 22 August 2016, Tawilla Locality Commissioner, Adam Jadid, expressed his appreciation for UNAMID's continued support to youth projects in his locality and surrounding villages, and appealed to the Mission to augment this support thereby ensuring that sustainable peace, stability and development is achieved in Darfur.

Speaking at the commemoration of the UN International Day of the Youth organized by UNAMID Communications and Public Information Section (CPIS), in collaboration with Tawilla Youth Association, the Commissioner noted the on-the-ground Mission initiatives aimed at fostering peaceful coexistence among Darfuri communities in the region. “We work well with UNAMID here in Tawilla.  We have very good coordination with the Mission and look forward to maintaining such relationships which guarantee UNAMID mandate deliverance,” stated the Commissioner.

The event took place at Tawilla locality, next to the camp for internally displaced persons who recently arrived at the site, fleeing the fighting in Jebel Marra. Hundreds of people from different strata of society such as traditional leaders, women, youth, students, government officials and UNAMID staff led by Deputy Joint Special Representative-Political, Mr. Jeremiah Kingsley Mamabolo, attended the commemoration. The crowds were treated to some colourful traditional dances and a musical concert.

Speaking on the occasion, DJSR Mamabolo, reiterated UNAMID's commitment to fulfilling its mandate in the region and emphasized the critical role of the youth in restoring sustainable peace and stability in Darfur. “Youth are future leaders and community builders. They can play a positive or negative role in society. We, with the elders here present, should do our best to orient them to be future leaders so that they can contribute positively to society,” DJSR added.

UNAMID CPIS organized similar activities to mark the  International day of the Youth in all five states of Darfur.
