UNAMID Provides Training Workshop for Prison Officers in North Darfur

On 22 May 2016, UNAMID Rule of Law Section, in collaboration with the state Prisons Administration, launched a two-week workshop on management and operations of prisons for 30 prisons officers in El Fasher, North Darfur. The workshop aims at equipping prisons officers with necessary skills to improve the treatment and care of inmates in accordance with human rights.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Alex Mugisha, UNAMID Training Coordinator, stated that UNAMID facilitates training for prison officers on key related subjects as they play crucial role in society safety.

The Director of North Darfur Prisons, Colonel Mutasim Abdulfatha Khalafalla, thanked UNAMID for the initiative and pointed out that the participants will benefit from the knowledge and expertise given in the training on dealing with inmates according to the international standards.

Musaab Husein Adam, a participant in the workshop, explained that the training is useful for all the officers who took part in it. “I believe that we will obtain better knowledge and skills in dealing with prisoners through such workshop,” he said.

UNAMID intends to arrange similar training for 150 national prisons officers in all Darfur’s states. The training will contribute to providing safe and secure custody to inmates and help them have opportunity for rehabilitation and reformation to prepare them for community reintegration upon release.
