HIV and AIDS interventions in peace keeping operations are supported by the UNSC 1308 (17th July 2000). The resolution stresses the need to address HIV/AIDS in all possible ways.
UN General Assembly Special Session on HIV/AIDS on 27 June 2001: The UN GA special session on HIV/AIDS adopted a declaration of commitment which Calls on all United Nations agencies, regional and international organizations, as well as non-governmental organizations involved with the provision and delivery of international assistance to countries and regions affected by conflicts, humanitarian crises or natural disasters, to incorporate as a matter of urgency HIV/AIDS prevention, Care and awareness elements into their plans and programmes And provide HIV/AIDS awareness and training to their personnel.”

To make accessible HIV and AIDS related services to all mission personnel through interventions like awareness raising, peer education, Voluntary Confidential Counseling and Testing (VCCT) and working with external partners such as MoH/SNAP, UN agencies, communities and national organizations
The team of HIV/AIDS Unit has extended to all sectors which include, the Head Quarter, comprising of the Chief HIV/AIDS Adviser, the Deputy and an HIV/AIDS Trainer/Counsellor. In addition, there is also an HIV/AIDS Officer /Trainer under North Darfur sector in Elfasher. Moreover there are also HIV/AIDS Trainer/Counsellors under sector west each distributed to Zalengei and El Genina. Finally there are 2 HIV/AIDS Trainer /Counselors distributed to Nyala.
The HIV/AIDS Unit has established good partnership with other Organizations and UNAMID related departments which include;

• HIV sensitization to all UN personnel including military, police and civilian.

• Ensuring access to HIV prevention material like condoms, and Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)
• Establish a mission wide network of HIV and AIDS focal points
• Advocacy and dissemination of information, education and communication (IEC) materials on HIV and AIDS
• Work with line government institutions, national organizations and UN agencies to reach out to the affected population and national uniformed services.

• The HIV/AIDS unit has managed to do outreach HIV/AIDS Awareness trainings for uniformed personnel in the sectors including Nyala, Elgenina, Zalengei, Nertiti, Mukhjar, Um Kadada, Kutum, Mellite, El Fasher, Zam Zam, and Malha.
• The unit has also been successful in delivering HIV/AIDS Awareness to the national staff and individual contractors working in UNAMID.
• The unit has successfully distributed and promoted correct and consistent use of condom within the mission in order to hinder the spread of HIV/AIDS.
• The unit is continuously publicizing the UN policies on HIV/AIDS and Promoting the UN CARES 10 minimum standards on HIV/AIDS.
• The HIV/AIDS is integrated in a series of team sites and sector Child DDR activities.
